In the summer of 2005, renowned Quebec multidiscipline artist/musician Robert Marcel LePage asked Jones to create original artwork for a new CD in  tribute to the legendary clarinetist Pee Wee Russell.

It was most fitting because Jones was acquainted with many of Pee Wee’s friends and colleagues, most notably tenor sax legend Bud Freeman.

Pee Wee Russell

In the 1980s, while working on a series of portraits of jazz legends from the 1930s and 1940s, Jones became friends with several famous musicians.

In 1987, the legendary trumpet player Wild Bill Dawson asked Jones to paint a watercolour portrait for his next album on the Jazzology label. Sadly it was also his final album.

Famous jazz clarinetist Artie Shaw also chose Jones’ artwork for the cover of his 1991 MusicMasters release “Artie Shaw, Rare and Unreleased”.

The painting was also used for the cover of the 1992 reprint of Shaw’s autobiography “The Trouble with Cinderella”.
